The Cast Iron houses are two semi-detached council houses that were built in the Brewery Fields Estate in Dudley in 1925.
The 1940 house displays everyday life in wartime Dudley and the 1968 house shares a snapshot of life for a family who lived in this era.
Cast Iron toilet cisterns were popular in the 1940s, known for their durability and reliability. They were a staple in many households and buildings of that era. With this in mind, two Thomas Dudley Dauntless Cascade high-level cast iron cisterns were donated to the museum to enhance the authenticity of the houses. They were manufactured right in the heart of the Black Country, at the Dudley Foundry which is still producing castings today.
The Thomas Dudley Foundry paved the way for our plastics manufacturing plant in the 1950s when advancements in technology and plumbing standards led to the requirement of more cost-effective and corrosion-resistant materials.
